Our building is beautiful and historic with plenty of room for all of our church activities. We are an open and friendly church in which all are welcome for regular Sunday morning services, Sunday school, Bible studies, or for one of the many other activities which take place in the church each week.

Our facilities are used not just for our own activities, but by many community organizations. We have a Bridge club, a harmonica group and an Alcoholics Anonymous Group that meet regularly in our building, among others. Various parts of the building are available for rent on a regular basis or for things like weddings, funerals, baptisms, craft fairs, etc.sanctuary_wedding

Sanctuary

Our beautiful sanctuary is the home for our Sunday morning worship services and other special services such as those held on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Christmas Eve, etc. It's also where we share the milestones in our members' lives, such as baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals.

The sanctuary has a very traditional and classical look with lots of dark wood and soaring ceilings with rafters pointing heavenward. It seats about 250 and is air conditioned. It also has simple stained glass windows on each side which can be opened in summer and fall to let in a nice cross breeze.

The focal point of the sanctuary is the "Christ Window", a beautiful stained glass creation which towers over the altar and dates back to the opening of the church in 1927. We are also blessed with a wonderful pipe organ. The choir loft is in the back of the sanctuary so their beautiful voices pour over parishioners as they offer up their gift of music.

The sanctuary is available for rent by contacting the church office at 630-832-2580 or by e-mailing us at elmhurstucc@sbcglobal.net .

In addition to the sanctuary, we also have a smaller, more intimate Chapel available for worship services and other purposes. The Chapel, which was part of the 1971 remodeling of the church, has a slightly more modern look than the sanctuary. It holds about 50 people and is used for early morning services and other special events. It comes complete with its own organ.

Fellowship Hall

turkey_carvingRight below our sanctuary, on the lower level of the church is Fellowship Hall. Fellowship Hall is aptly named as it is where we gather for "fellowship". We have frequent events here that help build a sense of community for our congregation. These include our church pot lucks, chili suppers, pancake breakfasts, Advent and Lenten dinners, Oktoberfests and lots of food and friendship when we get together!

Fellowship Hall is a big room so there is plenty of space for everyone to sit and eat and still set up a cake walk or a bean bag toss for the kids. The room has been used for other purposes too, such as performances or craft fairs.

It is equipped with a complete kitchen that makes using other fun events. The members of First Congregational Church like to eat, so you can count on plenty of good the room for banquets possible. There's everything needed including an industrial sized refrigerator, china, dishwasher, stove and griddle big enough to feed an army of worshippers, or perhaps guests from a wedding reception.

In addition to Fellowship Hall, we have another large room that can be used for meals, meetings, parties, etc. Known as Pilgrim Hall, our choir practices here on Thursday nights and the local Bridge club meets here. There is a movie screen that drops down from the ceiling for presentations and a small kitchenette for refreshments.

Parlor

parlor_2Before and after Sunday morning church services, our members meet and greet each other in the Parlor. Just across the Tree of Life Foyer from the Sanctuary, the parlor is our "living room" with couches, chairs, and tables arranged for conversation. Coffee and cookies or other yummy treats are shared here on Sunday mornings. This is made possible by a kitchenette which opens into the parlor and has a small refrigerator, sink and coffee making equipment. There's also a grand piano in the Parlor that can be used to sing "Happy Birthday" when we're celebrating someone's big day by having a special cake along with our Sunday coffee.

The Parlor is used for other activities too. Informal meetings are held here. Brides wait to walk down the aisle and families gather together after a loved one's funeral in this very comfortable space.
