Sunday, August 10 through Friday, August 15, 2009
Families with youth in the 7th through 12th grade have a wonderful opportunity to broaden their young Christian scope from the surrounding communities of Illinois. On the morning of Sunday, August 10th our delegation of adult chaperones and youth depart to Rock Island IL.
A little about Rock Island, according to the US consensus bureau, as of 2007 the population is at 39,684. It is part of what is called the Quad Cities along with neighboring Moline and East Moline, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa. The original Rock Island, from which the city gets it's name, is the largest island in the Mississippi River and is now known as Arsenal Island. Rock Island is a river city, with much of its land neighboring the Mississippi river. One of its coolest attractions is Centennial Bridge which is an awesome way to travel to and from Iowa.
While in the Quad cities, our delegation will be living in the Parish House of our sister church, Church of Peace United Church of Christ. The house is very comfortable and appropriate for accommodating youth groups. Our delegation will be working with Project Now, one of Rock Island's most established community organizations. Project Now and Peace Church UCC are celebrating 10 years of collaborating with youth groups who have come to work on many of Project Now's housing projects in Rock Island.
This summer's youth work experience is a great way to introduce youth to Mission Work a distance away. Youth will build community among themselves and experience church in a whole different way. As Christians we (our Church) want our youngsters to learn to serve others at a very young age. Youth work trips are wonderful ways to set our children on the path to service to others. If you have yet to register your youth, please do so right away there are only a few slots left.
See a slide show (PowerPoint) from the Mission Trip in 2006.
